Organ Donation – Donate Life

Organ donation…

Ahh… worlds lose their way when I have to talk about this term.

It’s very difficult for both the organ donor and organ recipient to work on the transfer of the organs. Especially because even as persons we are ready to give / receive the organ, our body is not ready to do so. The body is very particular about its own organs, and to make it adapt a new organ is a tough job.

But with the reality of time, organ donation has become a part and parcel of life. With the advancement of technology, there is a vast advancement in diseases also, and what is to be blamed is our life style.

Not going much off the track from organ donation, let’s talk about it mostly.

Here in my article, we are focusing only about organ donation that can be done after a person dies. Today, there are more than 123,000 patients waiting for their lifesaving organ or tissue transplants. 18 people die every day while waiting for a transplant.

In this scenario, one organ donor can save up to eight lives. The same donor can also save or improve the lives of up to 50 people by donating tissues and eyes.

Organ donation can be done, after one’s death or we can also register ourselves as organ donors. In these scenarios, many people think if a doctor knows that I am registered to be an organ or tissue donor, they won’t work as hard to save my life. Whereas the fact is the first priority of a medical professional is to save lives when sick or injured people come to the hospital. Organ and tissue donation isn’t even considered or discussed until after death is declared. Typically, doctors and nurses involved in a person’s care before death are not involved in the recovery or transplantation of donated corneas, organs or tissues. All major religions support donation. Donation takes place under the same sterile conditions as any medical procedure. A donor’s body is never disfigured and donation does not interfere with funeral arrangements.

Still many people don’t agree on this easily. What’s the sense of burning / burring a body that can give life to many other people? And it’s not about life of those people alone; it’s about the life of their family also. I know this seems very selfish, but sometimes we have no other option left. No one wants to take a part of someone else’s body and spend lakhs on making the body adapt that part. But this is the only thing that can be done. However advanced science becomes, it can’t create a human, or its body parts and this is why Organ donation, blood donation, bone marrow donation etc are very important.

I have tried to explain the same with the help of a small poem, hope this attempt can save and change someone’s life.

It’s not about donating organs, it’s about giving life.

  1. A lot of awareness is required to actualisation the organ donation. Lots of efforts are needed from Government and public at all levels. In my view Pledge Declaration signed by a Donor should be given a legal validity under the law. I have written to The Prime Minister of India regarding this on August 21,2016 and waiting the response.
